Un Birthday
Today is my unbirthday. Jon and I are going to see Two Towers again and then coming back to my place to make dinner. We'll see if he passes the Tiaterimus test...

Goodbye Neighbor
Fred Rogers passed away today. Its a sad day for children of all ages. What will our neighborhood be like without Mr. Rogers?
So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?

Improvements
I made a few improvements to the site tonight. The most interesting of which is a new About page, complete with email quiz results, email questionaires, and site information. I've started playing with a few little scripts for pop-up windows as well. There are a few new things on the favorites page too.

Saturday Night Live
The votes are in... Jon, Liz, Jeremy, and Sam have all agreed to dinner at Sakura Tokyo on Saturday night. No one else (other than Alan) has chimed in, so I guess its Saturday around 7pm. So, are you gonna be there or not?

Roger & Me
Hooray! My mom and sister got me a copy of Roger & Me for my birthday. I popped it in the VCR as soon as I got it. Gosh is it good. Michael Moore makes me homesick and sick of home at the same time. It was also interesting to see how much this film has in common with Bowling for Columbine, even though they're about two different issues (ostensibly) and separated by more than a dozen years of experience. The underlying formula is an effective one though.

Under the Weather
My roses are beginning to wilt. I've been good about watering them and trimming them occasionally, but they're still under the weather. I did a little research on the care of cut roses and it turns out that day or so they spent out of water probably did most of the damage. Being cut out of water allows air to travel up their stems and blocks the absorption of nutrients and water. So I recut them under water and let them soak so the air bubbles would leave. They look a little perkier, but they're still ragged around the edges.I'm not sure if they'll survive 'til Friday. I think its probably time to research proper drying techniques.

You could be the one I'll always love

But I'm busy mending broken pieces of the life I had before

It seems Sam has been playing with my cat. This was his away message this morning:

Sin City
It seems Alan gets to go to Vegas for his birthday. There's just no way I can compete with that. And to top it all off, he's not nearly as excited as I would be. That's OK though, since I'm trying to organize a trip to Sakura Tokyo for my birthday. I'm thinking Friday or Saturday night - I'm not too picky since I don't technically have a birthday. So, if you're in town, you should go. Perhaps a little Scorpion Bowling will be in order... What a way to celebrate.

An Artist's Work is Never Done
Finally, some art in the Art Gallery. I drew the featured images a little over a year ago and gave them as gifts to Alan and Eric. I recently begged them to make digital copies of the art so I could share it with everyone else, so thank them if you like what you see. Please keep in mind that my drawings are nudes, so if you're not comfortable with that sort of thing, don't look at them.

painted ponies
Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

awww
Your lips speak soft sweetness,
Your touch a cool caress,
I am lost in your magic,
My heart beats within your chest,
I think of you each morning,
And dream of you each night,
I think of your arms being around me,
And cannot express my delight,
Never have I fallen,
But I am quickly on my way,
You hold a heart in your hands,
That has never before been given away.

Krazy Kitty
Tiaterimus is running around the apartment like a beast posessed. It makes her name all the more fitting. Its pretty windy tonight, and everytime it picks up, she races toward the window to see what is making the sounds. It might not be so bad if she were actually a graceful cat. But, like her owner, she's a bit of a clod. So she bounces around, punctuating her noisy footfalls with little squeaks and rumbles. This generally only happens at night, just before or after we go to bed. Crazy cat...

Yummy
Four hours later, the bao turned out fairly well. We made several dozen and still have a little dough left over. Sam swears they're dead on, but I think they lack a lot of the puff and moisture that those at Chau Chow City have. I'm also having issues with sealing them - I end up with a ton of dough at the closure, which usually started splitting open. Perhaps there are a few tips on Chinese cooking websites. I'll have to keep looking.

Adventures in Bao
I'm going to try to make Char Siu Bao tonight, a chinese bun filled with barbecued pork, similar to the ones we can't get enough of at Dim Sum. I'm going to attempt it with the following recipe and some premade meat (with my own touches of course):
Buns (Basic Recipe)
24 Buns
1 package dried yeast or 1 cake fresh yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
4 1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons Crisco or vegetable oil
1/2 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons sesame seed oil
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Add 1 cup of flour. Mix thoroughly. Cover with cloth. Let rise 1 hour, until bubbles appear.
Dissolve sugar and vegetable oil in 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir well. Cool until lukewarm. Pour into yeast mixture. Add 3 1/2 cups flour.
Knead dough on lightly floured board until smooth. Put into extra large, greased bowl in a warm place. Cover with damp cloth. Let rise until double in bulk, about 2 hours.
Divide into 2 portions. Remove first portion and knead 2 minutes. Repeat with second. Roll each into roll 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Cut into 12 pieces (24 total).
Flatten each piece with palm of hand. Roll with rolling pin into 3 inch circles.
Brush with sesame seed oil. Indent middle of circle with chopstick.
Fold circle in half so that it becomes a half moon. Crimp edges tightly with fork.
Place each roll on separate square piece of foil on steamer tray. Cover tray with towel. Let buns rise to double in bulk, about 30 minutes. Remove towel.
Steam, tightly covered, over briskly boiling water for 10 minutes. Serve with Peking Duck, Crispy Duck, or with any filling you desire.
May be prepared in advance. May be frozen. Thaw out in plastic bag and re-steam 10 minutes.

Roses Are Red
Or in this case, pink.
I was in a miserable, hormone ravaged mood last night. I was bloated, out of clean clothes that fit, running low on feminine hygiene products, grumpy, and not in the state to deal with any of it. I ended up running late and getting stuck in nasty traffic on my way to the brewery to meet Jon. Being late made me feel so guilty - the last thing I wanted was for Jon to think I didn't want to see him or would've preferred to be somewhere else - and I ended up in tears. I called him and told him I was running late but fine, and not in the best of moods. When I got to the brewery, he was waiting for me with a dozen pink roses hidden in his car - just because I wasn't feeling well. Finding the roses was great, but seeing how much Jon cared was even better. Needless to say, my mood has been greatly improved. And hockey was fun too (yay mullet night), even though the Monarchs lost.

Friday Five for February 21, 2003
1. What is your most prized material posession? I'm not sure anymore, but I think my laptop would be pretty high on the list.
2. What item, that you currently own, have you had the longest? No contest: Big Daddy Bugs, my stuffed Bugs Bunny who has been around for over 20 years.
3. Are you a packrat? Take one look at my room and ask me again. That is, if you can find me amid the boxes and piles of junk.
4. Do you prefer a spic-and-span clean house? Or is some clutter necessary to avoid the appearance of a museum? I love the simplicity and clean lines of modern architecture and design. And I hate that there is too much clutter in my life to make those designs a reality. I don't even know if its possible to live comfortably in homes like that, but even so, they have incredible aesthetic appeal.
5. Do the rooms in your house have a theme? Or is it a mixture of knick-knacks here and there? My rooms used to have a bit of a theme in my old apartment - Retro New York in the living room and celestial in the bedroom. But I'm too lazy and not very big on themes anymore. They're too restrictive.
Answer your own Friday Five.

Friday Five for February 14, 2003
1. Explain why you started to journal/blog. My bud Chun Shek convinced me to join the blogging craze. Since I was already writing in my own private journal on occasion, I didn't need much persuading.
2. Do people you interact with day to day or family members know about your journal/blog? Why or why not? Just about everyone I interact with on a regular basis knows about my journal, even if they don't always read it. Sam refuses to read it (although I know he does on occasion) because he's not comfortable with it, which is fine with me. My family is my main audience - its an easy way to keep them all up to date on what I'm doing and how my life is going. There might be a few people that I don't want reading my journal, but for the most part, I don't care.
3. Do you have a theme for your journal/blog? Nope, and I probably never will. I like it haphazzard and personal.
4. What direction would you like to have your journal/blog go in over the next year? I'd like to see more links in my journal and more frequent updates, but that's it. Maybe more comments, but there's not much I can do about that myself.
5. Pimp five of your favorite journals/blogs. Do I have to? Why not just use the links in the sidebar over there?
What are your answers to the Friday Five?

Hockey Honey
Jon's taking me to see the Manchester Monarchs tonight. I'm really looking forward to it - I haven't seen a real hockey game since I was in high school. I did go to the Celebrity Hat Trick with Natalie in 2001, but I'm not counting that since it was such a fun and free-spirited game.

Pay Up
Starting next term, yoga is going to cost us. Seems WPI and the Healthy Alternatives office have run out of funds, so we'll be footing the bill. The cost of 14 classes to students is only $28 - about the same as 2-4 classes at a local yoga studio. I figure that's a tiny price to pay for my bi-weekly hour of zen. Joy, our instructor, has also offered to work with me as I train for tryouts.

Double Doctor
I went to another plastic surgeon today, on the recommendation of my primary care physician. She wasn't comfortable cutting out my remaining stitches that aren't dissolving, so she recommended someone she thought might. But this guy took one look at them, winced a bit and said he didn't want to do it. So now he's going to refer me to one or two other plastic surgeons who are more comforable with this type of work. Seems he didn't want to mess up my progress by poking a few tiny holes to pull out some annoying stitches. Don't any of these people understand that the pressure and presence of the stitches is probably doing more harm to my tissue regeneration and healing than making a tiny cut to remove them?

Conditioning
I got a call from the owner of the New England Storm tonight. She's trying to get a set number for preseason conditioning at Gold's Gym, which I'd love to go to. But it's at the Gold's Gym in Boston and costs $. I'm definately up for tryouts in April and May. I need to really get moving at the gym to boost my confidence going into tryouts. And have I mentioned that I'm incredibly nervous? Which is probably why the conditioning program sounds so appealing and scary at the same time. But this puts me one step closer to playing football. Yay.

Since When?
Sam wasn't too happy with me when I talked to him this morning. Seems he was upset because he didn't know where I was.
SchoonerBum: you left early in the afternoon in the middle of a blizzard without saying much and then didn't come home that night
Wpieric: did you call me?
SchoonerBum: that was on the agenda for noon
Wpieric: send out the search party
SchoonerBum: exactly
In my own defense, Eric, Liz, and Jon all knew where I was. Since when does Sam care? I guess I just never figured he would all of a sudden start worrying about me and need to know what I was doing. On top of that, Eric sounded like he'd invited Sam to come hang out as well but he had refused citing copious amount of work (which Madden research must have been a crucial part of). So I figured he already knew. There's just no accounting for fair weather friends.

Snowstorm
They predicted a snowstorm. And boy did we ever get one. Nearly two feet of snow in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately, its quite fluffy, so no good snowball fights or cool snowmen. I ended up snowed in with Eric and two adorable Dashound puppies he's babysitting. He picked me up yesterday afternoon in a little SUV and was supposed to bring me back in time to meet Liz for the finale of Joe Millionaire. The roads weren't plowed by then and Liz decided to stay in, so we figured it would be best if I just crashed here. This turned me into the unofficial puppy watcher, which meant I was out with them every few hours, shovelling the walk so that they wouldn't get burried while doing their business. The snow in the front yard is level with my waist and the banks on the side of the road are pretty much impassable. Gosh, I love snow, even when there's this much of it.

Valentine's Surprise
My Valentine's surprise was wonderful. Jon took me to the planetarium at the Museum of Science in Boston. It was just a little romantic and a lot of fun. As per the fourth clue, dinner was up to me, so we got take-out from a little Chinese restaurant and enjoyed it at home (with a little Bruins hockey in the background). He also had champagne and a plate of chocolate covered strawberries waiting for me (white chocolate because he found out I like it better) after dinner. And he set the mood with bunches of little candles all over the room. It made for a beautiful evening: not too sappy or romantic, but comfortable and fun. Although he swears they weren't very good, I enjoyed the blueberry pancakes he made me the next morning as well.

Wedding Bells
I'm not sure if I actually should be announcing this publicly, but I think its too big of a milestone in my life to go unmentioned. My father is getting married. I'm happy for him and Sue. I've been expecting it for a while now, and frankly, I'm surprised that he waited this long. The plans are for April, but I don't know the exact date yet. Come to think of it, I don't even know what kind of ceremony they're having, if any. But those are minor details in my mind. I guess this also means that Brenda will be my sister, which is pretty neat.

Playing Hookey
Jon took a sick day yesterday, so I went over to his place to make him feel better. Seems it worked a little too well - he wanted to take another sick day today to spend more time with me. He was actually feeling pretty good by the time I got there, but its the thought that counts. I even brought a book to read so that I wouldn't feel like I was completely blowing off my responsibilities. I don't know how he does it, but Jon makes me want to work as much as he makes me want to blow off work to be with him. And that's unusual.

Puss n Boots
The kitty has finally arrived. I've got a few pictures of her online, but none of them are all that great. She's getting used to the place and is starting to show a little of her personality. There are a few throw pillows under my bed and she has already staked her claim to them. General consensus is that she's cute but fierce looking. She's incredibly friendly, which is really nice. I still haven't decided on a name, which is all the more reason you should message Eric's AIMbot - RackliffDotCom - and make kitty name suggestions.

Be Mine
Liz and I spent the afternoon making Valentines and hanging out. I got out my crafty stuff and Liz brought her oragami stuff (and some food) and we turned on the TV for background noise and watched terrible weekend movies and talked about girl things and... It was just fun. On a related note, I officially have a Valentine. Jon agreed to be mine if I'd be his. Works out rather well, considering we have a date on Friday. I don't know what we're doing yet because its supposed to be a surprise, which I'll get hints about every day until then. I'm excited, to say the least. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about Valentine's Day.

Eric, Sam, The Dave, and I made a run to Petco this afternoon. I picked up a water dish, brush, and feathery thing for the unnamed kitty. Eric and Sam got her some live toys: two pair of betas. They're actually quite pretty (for fish) so I hope she doesn't take too much of a liking to them.

Fishy Date
Jon drove through the snow to take me out to the Sole Proprietor last night. Yeah, you read that correctly. I went to the Sole and actually ordered seafood. Not only that, but I enjoyed it. Poor Jon was so worried that he'd ruined his chances with me after he found out about my icthyophobia (fear of fish), but I managed it all better than expected. The smell was a bit unnerving at first, but Jon distracted me with some decent conversation. Turns out he's a great guy that I just feel at ease with. I really had a good time - I'm glad he made the trip. The date went so well that we've agreed to do it again next week.

DVD = Dead, Very Dead
My DVD player appears to have kicked the bucket. Technically, its my sister's. I'm just borrowing it until she figures out where she's going to stay. Unlike her stereo (which also broke in my posession), I had absolutely nothing to do with this problem. There were times last fall when I had to fiddle with the cord to get it to turn on. Since I've been back, no amount of fiddling will give it power. I'm not sure what to do with it now.

Here Kitty Kitty
I'm adopting a cat from Lauren. She's a small Maine Coon, about a year old, with golden eyes and a bit of spunk. So now, she just needs a name. Lauren calls her Mophead. The Murray girls suggested Cinderella, and I thought Lucy was nice. Now I'm thinking Calypso or Rugrat. Eric has suggested that I find a super-long name that sounds pedigreed. So, what's it going to be? Suggestions will be rewarded with a chance to meet said kitty (once I pick her up Saturday or Sunday).

Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
If that's the case, my roommates are as mortal as you can get. With the exception of Dan's vaccuming a few weeks ago, they haven't really cleaned anything in the apartment. I tried to go on strike a few weeks ago, just waiting for them to take their turns scrubbing the toilet and the tub, or mopping the kitchen floor. Still nothing. Dan's good about his dishes at least. Except for 90% of the silverware, which I found lying in the bottom of the sink when I came back a month ago. Its still waiting to be washed. I just couldn't take it anymore, so I started cleaning the bathroom yesterday, but I never finished. The more I cleaned the madder I got. If they were really busy and never had the time, their laziness wouldn't bother me. But if Sam's got time to play video games for hours on end and Dan can watch Thursday night TV, they've got time to run a sponge along a counter or sweep the floor. There's gonna be some serious hurting if things don't get cleaned up soon...

Hooray
Worcester has a least one real laundromat. Hooray! They've got huge front loading washers (in a variety of sizes) and big dryers. Not only that, but the dryers are free. The next time I go my sweaters are all getting tossed in with some dryer sheets for a quick refresher. I suppose I should mention that its near Webster Square, a couple miles down Park Ave from WPI, near Pep Boys and Applebee's. As much as I'd like to keep it all to myself, I like sharing too. Especially if it means happier (and cleaner) friends.

Falling for Maine
It took more than three months, but I finally got some pictures from my trip to Maine last fall in a gallery. Eric took a few of them, but I'd like to note that they were all taken with my digital camera. Some of them are even good. I was a lazy girl and forgot to put alt tags on them, so that will get done at some point. Until then, enjoy.

College Student's Friend
Ramen has long been a staple of poor college students. Just in case you're getting bored with it, here are a few tasty (or just plain strange) recipes to keep things interesting, courtesy of ChunShek.

Ouch
Just a little complaint. Sometimes you just have to, even if you hate to. I hurt my wrist somehow today. I'd like to blame it on yoga, but I don't remember it bothering me at the gym afterwards. Just a bicep cramp (which I can blame on yoga and the advanced sun salutations the subsitute teacher had us doing). I didn't really feel it until I was on my way to Dunkin Donuts. Now its tight and hurts to move. Dagnabbit, this is going to make heavy typing and knitting damn near impossible. I'm just hoping its better for the power yoga class on Thursday.

Coffee Talk
So I met this guy, Jim, for coffee (chai, if you want to get technical) tonight. Honestly, it was only going to be a hook-up, but I couldn't do it. He was nice, pretty attractive, but I just wasn't in the mood. (He was also a smoker. Eww.) I keep thinking that I'm better off having casual relationships until I get myself sorted out, but when it comes down to it, they aren't working out. They're not all that emotionally fulfilling, even if they do give me a little ego boost. I think perhaps the best ego boost would be someone wanting more of me than what I can give them in one night.

Lost
Have you ever lost your way
have you ever feared another day
have you ever misplaced your mind
watching this world leave you behind

Better
I feel better today. Not good. Not bad. Just better. And that's good enough for me right now.

Just Tonight
Every time that door closes, my heart breaks again. I can't explain it, but its like living the whole thing over again each time. Just tonight it slid shut and before the light within was extinquished, hot tears were rolling down my cheeks. I'll admit that things haven't been going well and that I'm hurting in a bad way. But it shouldn't hurt this bad. Its like a literal reminder that I've been shut out figuratively. And more than anything, I just want to be able to believe the part of me that knows a closed door is nothing more than a closed door. Just tonight, I want not to be broken inside.

How to Scare a Waitress
So my evening at the B was good. We split a couple buckets and had a few rounds after dinner. The more we drank, the more funny stories we told. I do think the best part was when Amy and I couldn't wait to break the seal any longer and made a group trip to the bathroom. While we were washing up, I asked if she wanted to see the new breasts. She of course did, so we went into a stall and I showed them off, the whole time both of us babbling about the surgery and what they looked like before. We'd kind of forgotten that our poor waitress was in the bathroom as well. When we came out of the stall, she was standing there washing up, her face just a few shades from red. We giggled it off, thinking that I could've embarassed more people by whipping them out at the bar. I think its a good thing I didn't.

Sin Wagon
Heading over to the B with Amy and Ernie tonight. We're planning on splitting a few buckets while we talk about old times. I think its just what I need right now.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Need a little bit more of my twelve ounce nutrition
One more helpin' of what I've been havin'
I'm takin' my turn on the sin wagon

Dream a Little Dream
Is it bad if I dream something and it then happens? Around 4am Sam bumbled home and just had to come talk to me since I was still up. He complained about having to get up in three hours to go to a track meet. I said something sarcastic and went to bed. So, sometimes this morning, I dreamed that he slept through his alarm and missed it. This of course required him to go live on campus for a week in "coach's detention." I'm not sure what woke me up, but at 10am, the first thing I heard was someone walking around in Sam's room. I looked up and sure enough, he was still here. In a way, I feel bad and want to ask him if he's doing ok.
UPDATE: OK. So it turns out that the person I saw in Sam's room was Dan, who was closing the door. Sam actually made it to the track meet, hangover and all, and threw reasonably well. And here I tried not to disturb the sleeping giant all day only to find out that he wasn't here or sleeping. Oh well. He did say that this morning's practice was a bit like detention and that he damn near missed the bus, so I guess I wasn't too far off...

Notable Quotables
The peer pressure was too much. I couldn't stand watching other people put weird little quotes and inside jokes on a webpage with annoying spying links in their profiles. I thought, "hey, I'm cool. I should to it too." But I couldn't be a normal sheep - I had to be a black sheep. The page will likely contain more than its fair share of quotes that make their originators look silly. So, without further ado, visit my quotes page.
