Go Blue
I just realized that the big game is this weekend. That's right, its time for the mighty Wolverines to devour the Spartans (sorry Barbie). They play tomorrow at noon on ABC. And yes, it will be on here in New England so I can watch.

Irrational? Not Me
| What Irrational Number Are You? | |||
You are e Of all the irrational numbers, you are the most intense. By nature you are powerful, although sometimes you can spiral out of control. You are good with money; the interest seems to just compound whenever you are near. When someone uses the word "exponential" they are probably talking about you. In some ways you and φ are a nearly perfect match. Not to mention how attractive φ is. But then, there is the remarkable π... Your lucky number is approximately 2.71828183 | |||

Happy Halloween
I'm tired, but not too tired to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. The party should be a smash, what with all the cooking, cleaning, and decorating Liz and I did last night. But we're ready, so bring it on, you gouls.
Have a fiendishly fun day!

Halloween Bash
The invitations have gone out (finally). If you didn't get one and you think you should have, let me know as soon as possible. Liz is still working on her guest list, and I guess I am too. I wanted to invite everyone from the first two, but I had trouble finding contact information for a lot of those people. I had to rely on the addresses in the Alumni Gateway and those are only as current as the owner wants them to be.

Daylight Savings
This is just disorienting. Not to mention wrong. Why should it be completely dark before I even think about leaving work? I want some sunlight, dagnabbit. Maybe I'm overreacting because it was such a dark and dreary morning, but I really feel like I missed out. And this is only the start. What's it going to be like in January and February? It may be time to buy a sunlamp for the WDO.

Stupid Monkey
I feel stupid right now. There was a Library staff meeting this morning and I completely missed it. With all of the other things going on around here, I forgot about it. Just logging into Exchange last night probably would've done the trick. Grr. Nothing like missing a meeting that's been on your calendar for months...

Spoiled Cat
I got a package from my mom yesterday. She got me a Halloween card and a couple choice pieces of candy. There was also a Bugs Bunny dressed in a skeleton costume from my aunt and grandmother. She got Tia some kitty toys. Four of them to make sure she's extra spoiled. Two hand-knitted mohair mice filled with catnip, a regular old catnip toy, and one of those little furry mice with rattles in it. All I heard last night was that damned mouse being tossed around the apartment, rattling into the wee hours. She liked the nice quiet mohair toys until I got the furry one out. If she's like this with my cat, what will she be like when I have kids? Will she be the grandmother that buys the kids all kinds of noisy toys like hula hoops, indian drums, and singing teddy bears?

Snow Day
There is snow in tomorrow's forecast. Hooray! And a 50% chance of it at that. I need batteries for my camera so I can take pictures of all that pretty snow.

Apple of My Eye
Jon and I made a trip to the Tougas Family Farm yesterday for a little apple picking. The parking lots were full, but the fields weren't crowded at all. We were able to fill a half-bushell bag with at least 6 varieties of apples: Gala, Mutsu, Empire, Liberty, Red Delicious, and Macoun. We tried a few others, but they weren't all at their peak. Jon was a big fan of the Liberties, which are bright red with crisp white flesh and a sweet flavor. I brought my camera and captured a few pictures of our day and apples. Much to my dismay, the batteries died before I got to the animal yard and the one-day-old goats. You can never have too many pictures of cute farm animals to show your sister... So far I've only used two to make old fashioned appley oatmeal. What else should I make with my share of the haul?

Titles
I fixed the titles on the site. Turns out all I needed was a new directive so that the server would process all of my files. It means I'm one step closer to implementing the new design.
Now that those titles are fixed, I'm hoping to get the other straightened out. The title for my car wasn't valid because one line had been whited out. My mom put her name in the wrong place and tried to fix it. So now the RMV won't accept it until the change has been notarized. Mom got some sort of notarized certificate which should do the trick.

Nail Biter
Its down to the last out for the Sox. We're all tied up at 5 in the top of the ninth. My stomach is doing somersaults. And Walker got the out. Shoot. Now we have to hold off the Yankees a little longer.

AAA
I have car insurance and a new/transfered AAA membership. Yay. Now I just have to take care of the Massachusetts registration and inspections. I also need to get my liscence. This means hours at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, but I suppose it will be worth the wait.

Halloween
It's baaaack...
Liz and I will be hosting a Halloween party this year. I really missed not having one last year. The holiday just wasn't the same without it, no matter how many costumes I made. Since Halloween falls on a Friday this year, we won't have to worry about getting everyone to class or work in the morning.
Except that I have to give a presentation at the Reunion Planning Workshop on Saturday morning... that kind of throws a wrench into the works.

Sweet Victory
The boys tied up the series tonight in an excellent performance. Now we just have to win tomorrow night and hand the evil empire another thumping at home.
On an unrelated note, I think I conquered my new stylesheet. It makes me feel accomplished, even if it only took 20 minutes. So here's a sneak peek of the change that will surely come over the site sometime in the coming weeks. Let me know if you see anything funky in your browser.

A European State of Mind
I was intrigued by a recent article in the New York Times that took a closer look at Europeans and their changing relationship with religion. Apparently, Europeans are drifting away from the church in increasing numbers. In France, only one in twenty attends service regularly, compared to one of every three Americans. That's not to say that Europeans aren't religious -- the vast majority identify themselves as Christians. It does, however, say something about the difference between American and European philosophy. I feel that a person's relationship with a divine spirit/entity/energy is intensely personal one -- one that should not be driven by the public or even played out in public. In America we have freedom of religion, but there is nevertheless a societal pressure to participate. Our beliefs invade nearly every aspect of our public lives. I think that after centuries of struggle, the Europeans may have found the right place for spirituality.
(Thanks to Alan for the article.)

Rainy Sunday
It has been raining all day. How fitting. After being so sick on Friday and running around on Saturday, all I wanted to do was relax. I was also looking forward to watching the Red Sox wipe the field with a few Yankees, but all that rain put a damper on that too.

Homecoming
Saturday was a perfect fall day. I spent most of my morning running around trying to put my presentation together. The network in the Library went down, so I tried to write a handout. But I couldn't print in my office. The CCC was closed, so I gave up on that. When I got to the Campus Center for the Class Board of Directors meeting, I discovered they they hadn't reserved a laptop for my presentation. I borrowed one station they were using for Bridge signup and Jami found a cable at the Information Desk, so my Web Design presentation ended up not being Webless. We had a great turnout, and I fully expect to hear from a bunch of classes in the coming weeks. Once the boards went to their individual meetings, I wandered off to Harrington where the Athletic Department was selling all of their old (and I mean old) uniforms and warm-ups. I caught the parade before heading back for lunch with the Alumni. Jami and I followed that up with dinner and the Sox game at my place.

Friday Five for October 10, 2003
1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones? I watch football, some hockey, and baseball.
2. What/who are your favorite sports teams and/or favorite athletes? I'm a Green Bay Packers fan, although I still like to root for the home teams: the Detroit Lions and the New England Patriots. Matt Light is one of my favorite football players, although I'll admit that's more because of his body than his reputation. I'm a devloping Boston Red Sox fan. Its hard not to like them when they've got a silly guy like Kevin Millar encouraging them to be silly too.
3. Are there any sports you hate? I used to hate baseball because I thought it was boring to watch. Now that I've been enlightend it no longer ranks with the worst of them: golf, figure skating, gymnastics, and car racing.
4. Have you ever been to a sports event? I went to a couple Red Sox games this summer, other than that I've only enjoyed local sporting events with the Flint Generals, Manchester Monarchs, and the Bruins All-Stars charity team.
5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play? I played basketball for a few years in junior high but gave it up for marching band. I did however throw shot and discus on the track team for three years. And I'm still looking to play football on a women's team.
How sporty are you? Answer your own Friday Five and find out.

Not Today
I nearly called in sick today. But I came in anyway because I have at least one site to launch, several site plans to work on, multiple projects that need to be finished, and a 45-minute presentation to work on. I also needed to close registration for the Homecoming Fly In. Now, we've added a small, but time-sucking crisis to the list. At this point, my throat is so swollen that it hurts to breathe. Drinking is a problem too -- while the water feels good going down, some of it gets in my airway on the way down, making me feel like i'm drowning. I don't think I'd feel any better if I were at home, but I wouldn't feel worse either.

Happy Birthday Barbie
Its that time of year again. You know, when my little sister doesn't seem so little anymore. This year she's turning 22. Its a pretty uneventful birthday, but I hope her friends make up for not being able to throw her a big birthday bash last year because she was in Scotland. And just so that everyone knows, her birthday present is still in the mail because I keep forgetting that its October already.

Chills
I've got the chills. There are two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the bases are loaded. The Sox are one out away from the ALCS.
Cowboy up kids, because they're in.

Lazy
I feel like I've been lazy about posting in my journal. I didn't even do my Friday Five. But suffice it to say that I haven't been totally lazy (well, other than going to bed at 9:00 p.m. on Friday and not getting up until 10:00 a.m. Saturday). I cleaned and reorganized the craft corner in the apartment, found brown shoes, did a load of laundry, finalized my halloween costume, read a lot, and watched the Red Sox pull off two amazing victories to keep the World Series dream alive. I just need to write about the small things a little more.

*Twiddle*
I feel like I have nothing to do. I woke up early (7:00 a.m.) to make cranberry pumpkin muffins for Joan's birthday and it took a little longer than I thought. They didn't go in the oven until 8:20. I was hoping to take a shower while they were baking, but Liz beat me to it. When she was done, I couldn't risk missing the buzzer for the muffins so I had breakfast and watched CNN. Then they were about done and Jeremy decided to shower. I had planned on leaving by 8:45, but that's obviously not happening now. And did I mention that I really have to use the facilities? So I'm just twiddling my thumbs, looking for something to do besides the bathroom dance and fanning the muffins... Maybe I should have gotten up at 6:00.

Welcome Ainsley!
Amy had her baby tonight, sometime before 8:00 p.m. when Jami gave me the good news. She weighs 8 pounds and 4 ounces and is just 19 inches long. I'm sure she's amazingly cute -- hopefully we'll have pictures soon to show just how cute. And details too! I hope to be able to visit sometime in the next week, but I'm not sure when. I have a feeling that giving birth is quite overwhelming and the last thing that most new parents want to do is entertain guests.

The Big Chill
The weather has finally turned cold and I'm loving it. I get to wear fuzzy sweaters and boots. I can use blankets and quilts without air conditioning.
