Could've Fooled Me
I'm ready to drop from exhaustion. I've been up since 7 a.m. and plan to get up in seven short hours. But at least our April Fool's site is 99% complete. Alex is transferring over the last bits of his interactive fun and I think Troy is just waiting for the clock to strike 12 so he can launch the whole she-bang. Me? I'm just here for moral support at this point.
I didn't contribute quite as much this year as I did last year. I would blame writer's block, but I was able to write two decent stories, so it's probably not that. One even includes a biblical verse translated into Klingon. At least the Web site I got it from said it was Klingon, and we all know I'm not quite geeky enough to be able to tell.

RIP
Terry Schiavo, may she rest in peace, is dead. I can't even begin to imagine the relief that her family must be feeling. All I can say at this point is that I don't want the end of my life to be drawn out and scrutinized the way hers was. When my time comes, I just want to die peacefully.

Sure Sign of Spring
It must be spring.
As you can see, William, our devoted senior workstudy, took my snowflakes down this afternoon. (And yes, our ceiling really is that disgusting.) The sunshine and uncommonly warm weather must have goaded him into it. Why else would you get rid of such cute little snow flakes?
I miss them already.

A New Folder
Hell hath frozen over. Troy just created a new folder for CS on his hard drive. This is significant because it is the official start of us touching the Computer Science Department Web site in an attempt to make it pretty.

Let the Fun Begin
Now that the whole engagement thing has started to sink in, it's time to start planning. And I mean it when I say I want it to be fun. I hear so many horror stories about wedding planning that it makes my head spin. It's enough to make me want to hire a wedding coordinator to handle everything. Except that I love doing this sort of thing and could probably be a pretty darned good wedding coordinator myself. Well, that and I don't want to indebt myself to pay for the thing.
So far we have...
- conferred with our families
- chosen a date
- decided on a general location
- made a stab at a guest list
- contacted several vendors
- perhaps most importantly, set a budget.
There's still plenty to do, but I know that once we make a few key decisions things will start falling into place. And until those things start falling into place, I'm going to be keeping most of the plans under wraps. Except for the super fun stuff, like finding a dress or picking our "colors." Which brings me to my next topic --
Who wants to help me find a dress?
I just want a pretty sea of white silk and tulle that magically makes me look less like a beached whale and more like a woman in love. And I suspect I'm going to need some help. I've gotten to the point where I know which casual clothes will look right on me without even taking them off the hanger; for the most part anyway. But dresses are a whole different story. So I'm looking for a few foolhardy friends to help stuff me into those sample gowns that won't close without the help of a hydrolic winch and give me an honest opinion about how they look on me. I'd like to visit Marry and Tux in Nashua and maybe David's Bridal, which is right down the road, on a Saturday morning sometime in the next few weeks. I just need to make appointments.
So, is anyone up for dress hunting, lunch, and shopping in Nashua on say, April 9 or 16?

Five on Friday for March 25, 2005
1. What type of camera do you have? Sony Cybershot P20. It's only 1.3 megapixels, but it takes nice enough photos in natural light. They're not what I'd call print quality, but they're definately Web quality. And it uses Sony memory sticks, making interfacing with my laptop pretty easy. I finally threw my old Olympus away last fall after finding out that there was no good way to fix it. I'm in the market for a new camera, but have more important things to spend money on.
2. How do you store your photos (box, album, computer, etc.)? I have a couple small albums and a fairly large box for prints. Most of the photos I have taken in the last two years have been digital, so they're all stored on one of two computers.
3. What is your favorite thing to take pictures of? I like taking pictures of people, but most of them don't like to be the subject, so I mostly photograph flowers, plants, and random objects.
4. Do you like having your picture taken? I can be a ham at times, but for the most part I don't care one way or the other.
5. Do you prefer posed or candid pictures? I'm a big fan of the photojournalistic style, which is more candid than posed.

It's Here!
It was all I could do to keep myself from tearing into the package full of tissue as I drove home. I caved a little and opened the box while I was in the parking lot at UPS. But I stopped myself from going any further when I saw all the individually wrapped bundles. I swear, it was taunting me from the passenger seat all the way home. It was like my birthday all over again.
It turns out that my secret pal is really observant. First I opened a little bean full of Jelly Belly jelly beans, the pinnacle of modern beans. Next came a skein of Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud in the Autumn colorway. I immediately rubbed it on my face because it was so soft. And the color? It's perfect -- exactly what I would've chosen for myself. A well-padded bundle revealed a mini Easter basket made of twigs, herbs, and acorn tops with robin eggs nestled amongst a sprinkling of wild flowers. So pretty. She included a neat little black journal, which unfortunately doesn't show up well in the photo. The biggest package contained two balls of Lion Brand Landscapes in Summer Fields. I cannot express how much I love this yarn. I have already used the Rose Garden, Autumn Trails, and Country Sunset colors and have difficulty passing it by in the yarn aisle. This batch is already destined to become a little felted purse. The final surprise was a pair of 9" Swallow Casein needles. And at 3.75mm they'll be just about right for making a little lacy something from the Alpaca Cloud. Thank you Secret Pal!

Note to Self
Do not, and I repeat: do not eat colorful food. I don't care how good the sauce tastes or how nutritious the spinach is. All of that stuff is wreaking havoc on your intestines.
Nothing seems to be agreeing with my digestive system lately. You'd think that indigestion and stomach bloating gas would make me down my intake, but it hasn't slowed me up as much as it theoretically should. So, I need to go on a diet. I want to eat just one food item a day and chart it's effects on my body. Kind of like phase two and three of the South Beach diet, but cutting out everything.

UPS Strikes Again
I have two packages from UPS waiting for me at the depot in Shrewsbury. One is from my secret pal, who is no doubt worrying that the goodies she has sent have been lost in the bowels of the big brown monster. The other is a bit of girly goodness from my sister: the Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason DVD. The packages aren't even in my hot little hands and yet I feel spoiled already. Isn't it neat how that works?
I'm going to be sorely disappointed if the packages aren't waiting for me. When Barbie sent me the first half of my birthday present, Bridget Jones's Diary, I missed the first two delivery attempts. I figured I would also miss the third, so skipped the whole process and filled out a form online to have the package held for me to pickup. I drove to Shrewsbury, making it inside just a smidge before 6 p.m., and asked for my package. They didn't have it. "It must've gone out on the truck because you sent your request too late. It'll be here tomorrow." There was no delivery notice on my door when I got home, so I made plans to head back to the UPS center the next day. I stayed home the next day, sick with a nasty cold, contemplating driving out to pick up my package. But UPS delivered it right to me. You heard me. At the same time I was getting ready to go pick it up, it was on a truck headed for my doorway. I suppose it worked out, but they completely ignored the hold request in their system. So I'm hoping this isn't standard operating procedure for them.

Jolly Rancher
Flavors: apple, blue raspberry, strawberry, orange, watermelon, grape
Size: these beans are on the large size (1.6g each), like the beans of our childhood
Color: dark and bright, more transparent than other modern beans
Texture: firm shell with gummy center
Overall Experience: These crunchy beans have an intensely sweet concentrated flavor, not unlike Kool-aid or Fruit Roll-ups. The high sugar content makes them disolve quickly in your mouth, but require chewing because of the firm shell.

Motivation
That's my only real motivation -- not to be hassled, that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Jolly Rancher Bold Fruit Smoothie
Flavors: peach, mixed berry, orange, strawberry, and watermelon
Size: a little larger than most modern jelly beans, these oblong beans are approximately 1.6 grams each
Color: bright pastels with an abundance of pink and purple shades
Texture: firm gummy center
Overal Experience: These beans are much bolder than the color suggests. The fruit flavors are a bit off, but that could be the smoothie part working its, uhh, magic. If you wanted to call it magic. Because they're really not all that magical. In fact, they're a little disappointing. Especially the watermelon smootie flavor. It's just wrong.

Happy Spring
It's finally spring, and although the snow is still lingering, things are finally starting to warm up. I have an urge to bust out the capris and flip-flops. Not so sure I'm ready to give up my trademark sweaters. Maybe I just need to find a few in more spring-friendly colors.

Tied Up and Twisted
Things aren't so good today. One of our clients has complained to our VP that we're refusing to help them. The story that has been handed down to me through several levels of management seems to have warped the original misunderstanding into a campaign against students. I mean, to hear that someone thinks we're refusing to help the students makes me sick to my stomach. I acted to resolve the issue two days ago, less than 30 minutes after it landed in my inbox. I even sent a follow-up this morning. But I haven't heard a word from the client, which ties my hands because I can't do my job until they give me some key information. So instead we're all on edge, waiting to be reamed by the powers that be.
UPDATE: I got the information and have done my part. Hopefully it will be enough.

Five on Friday for March 18, 2005
1. Describe one thought currently on your mind. Why do people change their minds so often?
2. List two sounds you can hear right now. Faint strains of Tainted Love eminating from Troy's computer and the tippity-tappity of Kate's keyboard.
3. Name three songs you like. Fly Away by Poe, Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch, and Lonesome Wind Blues by Rhonda Vincent. all taken from my meager iTunes library.
4. List four books on the bookshelf closest to you. Idiot's Guide to UNIX, Web Design in a Nutshell, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling, and Millennials Go to College by Neil Howe and William Strauss.
5. Name five things that make you mad. Mud. Improperly perforated "tear here" strips. Turns without turn signals. Domestic shipping companies. PETA.

Cheery Cherry
I tried to make Aunt Bev's black cherry thanksgiving dessert last night. I've been hoarding black cherry jello for a couple months, just hoping that I'd stumble across frozen cherries one of these days. Last week at Trader Joe's, I did. They leave a little to be desired though -- not as firm or flavorful as I had hoped -- but they're sweet black cherries. Without them, this interpretation of a childhood favorite would be lost. Unfortunately, I lost track of time and let the jello set up too much before stirring in the cherries and cool whip, but it still seemed to turn out fine. All this talk is making me crave a big bowl of it though...

Idol Pleasures
I have never been a fan of American Idol or any of the "idols" it has produced. And aside from catching a few of the auditions on a bar TV, I'd never really watched it. This season is different though. I voluntarily watched some snippets of the auditions while channel surfing and actually sat through one of the first finalist shows. And tonight, for some reason, I left the TV tuned to FOX after the Simpsons. The kids were uninspiring. Until Nadia stepped on the stage. I literally got chills when she sang. And then Bo. *shiver* He rocked me completely. If they had albums, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Those two have talent that TV just can't contain.

To GOLD Or Not To GOLD
So, GOLD (WPI graduates of the last decade) is hosting a financial planning seminar later tonight in Waltham. I've been thinking about going, even though I remember most of what I learned in my personal finance class and still have the book on my bookshelf. They've lined up a number of interesting topics to be presented by financial advisors from American Express, a number of whom are WPI alums. One was even on my floor freshman year and a hung out with my roommate. Ah, the memories. They makes it hard to picture him as a financial advisor, and even harder to imagine taking advice from him. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but my memories of him just don't want to mesh with the image of a trusted financial advisor.

White Weekend
It snowed far too much this weekend. And that's coming from someone who loves snow. Jon and I cancelled our Saturday dinner with Liz and Jeremy because it seemed like it would never stop. It was only five or six inches, but falling an inch or more an hour at the heaviest times. On the plus side, we got to stay inside with the new kitten. She's adjusting pretty well, eating plenty of food and finally drinking substantial amounts of water. And other than waking us up around 6am every morning by mewing in our faces, she's pretty darn cute.

Clutch
The little cabled clutches at Margaret Nicole are so cute. And since I'd like to practice my cables and use up a few spare balls of yarn rolling around my stash, it seems like a good project. In fact, I picked up a dowel to make the handles with earlier tonight.

KRSP3 - Part 2
I got another e-card from my secret pal today featuring Botticelli's La Primavera. According to the card:
Spring is on Her way, and a package from your Secret Pal will accompany Her...
...or follow, depending on my timing, but it won’t be too long a wait!
Wee! Fun spring surprizes are on their way to my doorstep, along with some neat goods I won on ebay for my own pal.

Five on Friday for March 11, 2005
1. Did you have a nickname as a child? If so, have you outgrown it? My family used a lot of endearments and silly nicknames but not many stand out in my mind, except Lizzard Breath. And since Sarah is a hard name to shorten, I was mostly just Sarah T. I did have a few friends that called me Toenail in junior high...
2. Who was your best friend? Carrie Dunn, who lived down the street. Then after she moved, Liana Lloyd, one of the only other girls in my grade in my class. And let me say, you just couldn't be best friends with someone in another grade in those days. And we weren't in the same lunch/recess periods as the normal classes, so we were pretty limited to our few classmates.
3. Were you picked first or last for playground games? I was bigger and stronger than everyone else, but severly uncoordinated, so I was usually in the middle of the pack for girls.
4. Were you a bully or the one being bullied? I was easy to pick on because I was too big to retaliate without getting in trouble, but I wouldn't say I was ever really bullied. I suppose I could've been a bully if I wanted to, being almost twice the size of most of my classmates. Instead I was a sympathizer and a friendly cajoller.
5. Did you prefer the swings, slide or monkey bars? I was totally a swing girl, but the jungle gym was my secret passion. Since I was heavy, I didn't have the strength to swing myself from rung to rung underneath the monkey bars. I could hang upside down on them and flip myself around with the best of them though. I didn't want to look like a fat fool though, so I'd mostly just sit on one of the rungs, dangling my legs while my skinny friends climbed around like gymnasts.

The Year of the Tooth
I had two molars filled last week and at least one more done on Tuesday. I also had a consultation with an oral surgeon yesterday about my wisdom teeth. Turns out I actually have four of them, not just two painful ones. The bottom two that I'm familiar with have grown in just fine, except my mouth is just a little too small for them, so they're still partially burried in the gums at the back of my mouth. There are two in the top as well, but they haven't decended. So the bad news is that the oral surgeon wants to extract them all. The good news is that the bottoms will be easy extractions because they're not impacted or deformed and that insurance should cover everything but my standard copay. I'm going to try to schedule it for April or May. And I still have a few more appointments with my regular dentist for more fillings.

Five on Friday for March 4, 2005
I totally forgot to do my Five on Friday last week. I supposed doing it today is better than not getting to it at all though, so here it is: Party Time
1. What kind of parties do you like best (big bashes, small get-togethers, casual, formal, etc.)? While I like occasional big bashes, I'm pretty happy with small get-togethers. And I definately prefer casual to formal. I'm doing my best to keep my wedding plans from drifting too far down that road to formality.
2. Do you prefer to be the center of attention, or off to the side? I like to move in and out of the spotlight. I enjoy a little attention now and then, but being at the center of everything takes too much energy.
3. Have you ever had so much to drink at a party that you couldn't remember parts of the night? Nope -- I know my limit.
4. How often do you get out for a night of fun? If by fun you mean party, a few times a year. But fun doesn't necessarily have to be "going out."
5. Do you like surprise parties? I have a tendancy to run late, which is at odds with the surprise party MO. That makes them more stressful than they should be. Otherwise, they're fine.

Of Birthdays and Other Life Events
It's been over a week and I still have trouble believing I'm 25. And not just 25, but 25 and engaged. I keep looking at the ring from time to time and getting a warm fluttery feeling in my chest. Not only have I found a wonderful man to love, but he loves me back and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. It's kind of overwhelming when I think about it, but in a good way.
The supressed organizer in me is anxious to iron out our plans though. Jon and I were able to talk about our future more last weekend, but we don't have any definite plans other than getting married. Right now there are just too many variables, like:
- my education. I still need to finish my degree. A lot of things in the future hinge upon that. Without it, my career path is significantly limited.
- my career. Five years ago, I was certain that technical writing was my calling. I saw myself doing it forever, moving into technical editing and maybe even publishing. And while I still have the desire to help people understand the complex, I just don't want to write manuals anymore. The Web is more interesting and flexible, but can be just as tedious. Then there's teaching. But that requires even more of the formal education I've been avoiding for the last couple years.
- our location. We like New England, but we know that it will be hard to stay here. Columbus wasn't just a pipe dream -- the company will probably try to move Jon again in the next couple years. It makes it harder to set mid-range goals.
We were able to agree that we want relative financial security, a house, and kids. In that order. We also did a little wedding planning, which at this stage means mostly budgeting and logistics. There are only a couple interesting things to note at this point. First, I am we are not willing sacrifice progress towards financial security and buying a house to have a splendiforous wedding. Second, we're not big fans of aforementioned splendiforous weddings. Although Jon is more keen on wearing a tux than I expected and would prefer I not wear pants. Finally, it's difficult to plan an inclusive wedding when your families live in different regions of the country. We need to consult our parents before we go much further.
And on a semi-related note, Alan is enjoying the same quarter-century milestones as I am. Five years ago, we figured we'd be doing these things together. Life shook things up a bit and now, instead of doing it together, we're just doing it at the same time. I couldn't be happier for him. If you have a moment, go wish him a happy birthday.

Kitten Capers
I forgot to mention it yesterday, but Celia arrived in Massachusetts safe and sound on Sunday night. She's cute as a button, as you can see from these photos. Tia, however, was less than thrilled with our bundle of joy. Like a giant puffball with fangs, she never really relaxed, even when we were keeping the kitten in a different room. Hopefully she'll mellow out and accept Celia. For now, Celia is living at Jon's.

A Well Chilled Home
I'm working from my well-chilled home today because that drippy nose from yesterday morphed into a full-blown cold. Between the nose, the sinuses, and the swollen throat, I couldn't sleep. So I cleaned instead. I know, you're asking yourself what kind of magical illness this is that it could make a "toss it anywhere" type of girl spend several hours sweeping, mopping, and organizing. It's probably some sort of 48-hour spring cleaning bug. I still have the urge to purge, so I suspect the giant box of books I've been meaning to get rid of for years will be sorted and redistributed to Goodwill, friends, and family. I would really like to go through the boxes of clothes and linens under my bed, but seeing as the room is a chilly 52 degrees (that's measured in fahrenheit degrees) it's unlikely to happen before the bug goes away. Luckily it's a few degrees warmer here in the living room -- and when I say a few, I mean just a few. The heat hasn't kicked on since sometime early this morning when I was in bed. Now I wish I had stayed in bed so it would at least be warm.

No More No Pudge
I went shopping last night while I was hungry. I wanted something freshly baked and tasty, but opted to stop at Trader Joe's instead of a fast food joint or even a regular grocery store. So I grabbed a box of No Pudge brownie mix. They're fat free, provided you make them with fat free yogurt. And fat free is a good thing when you're trying to keep yourself from getting fatter. I mixed them up as soon as I got home, just drooling at the thought of chocolately baked goods. They baked for the recommended time at the recommended temperature, until the top looked like it couldn't take anymore heat. I took my first piece a few minutes later, still warm from the oven. It was such a let down. The center was a gooey mess while the edges were perfect -- crispy on the edges, but still chewy and moist inside. The worst part was the actual flavor. Yes, it was chocolatey, but it seems like they tried to make up for the "no fat" bit by adding extra chocolate and sugar. And when I say extra, I mean I wish I'd added a cup of flour and an egg or two to the mix just to spread the flavor out. There is an upside though -- because it's so disappointing, I'll only be eating one piece instead of four or five.

My Nose is Running
And I can't catch it.
It seems I've sprung a leak from the middle of my face. I can feel pressure in my sinuses like I should be stuffed up, but the snot just keeps pouring out of me. I'm going to run out of tissues pretty soon, that is, if I don't run out of nose to wipe first. After making it through most of the winter without catching the flu or a serious cold, I was beginning to think I might go unscathed. I guess it's time to look for a good decongestant.

Secret Pal -- First Contact
I got a quick e-mail from my secret pal this morning, and I will be sending a note to my own pal this afternoon.
For those of you scratching your heads, I signed up for the Knitter's Review secret pal exchange a few weeks ago. So, for the next three months I get to brighten someone's day with a few thoughtful gifts. It also means I'll be getting a few random packages myself, which is always fun. Real cards, letters, and packages make all the bills, catalogs, and junk just disappear.

When Luck Runs Out
Monday was such a good day. And not just because Jon proposed -- although that was definately the best part. There aren't words grand enough to describe how good I felt. Luck was definately going my way:
- the traffic to Worcester was light
- my new driver's lisence came
- I found a great parking spot at work despite being late
- I was notified that I won a prize for filling out a dining services feedback form
- things at work went smoothly (for me)
- I got paid
- I had Moe's for lunch
- all urges to buy useless crap were easily curtailed on my shopping trip
- I watched a good episode of 24
- it snowed
- and did I mention that Jon asked me to marry him?
But my luck ran out on Tuesday:
- my laptop wouldn't recognize the iPod Shuffle Jon got me for my birthday
- I overslept and was late to work
- I got snow in my shoes and salt stains on my pants
- the embroidered (with a knitting sheep! squee!) sweatshirt Joan made me didn't fit
- my Mac wouldn't recognize the shuffle
- I disovered my prize was 20 cups of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate
- I also discovered that the cafe on campus doesn't think Chai is tea
- I got two teeth drilled and filled
- I didn't have the right size circular needle to start my next knitting project
- the back end of my car was clipped by a plow truck just a block from the knitting store
- the truck driver hit the gas and kept going
- an old man who witnessed the accident berrated me like it was my fault and walked off
- I stepped in slush up to my ankles while a friendly police officer filled out an accident report
- I got my car stuck on some ice while parallel parking in front of my apartment
- I slipped on the snow twice and fell once, very narrowly missing my ring
What a difference a day makes. I couldn't wait to get to bed last night, just so I could consider the day over. Life seems to be back to normal today: a nice happy medium.

In Like a Lion
I can't believe it's March already. What happened to February? The month is far too short in my estimation. It seems like just yesterday that I was making plans to create Valentine's and holiday thank you's for everyone I knew. And it never happened because the time in February is warped. I would schedule time to work on them and then it would be gone before I knew it. Same with the hats for Jon and Peggy. I would knit and knit, but when I set the needles down, I felt like I made no progress. I finally finished them last weekend, but the cards are still waiting to be assembled. Thankfully there are a few extra days in March -- maybe I'll get a few more things done.
