Good News

I got a call a lunch to let me know that both my dress and headpiece have arrived. That's two weeks earlier than the estimate. Hooray. Now I just have to head up to Nashua to pick it up. I also forgot to mention that the whole contract thing with the Marriott has been taken care of. So we're officially getting married on Saturday, August 20 in the Fallsview Marriott. According to my Pottery Barn registry reminder e-mail, that's just twelve weeks away.

Oh. My. God.

Must finish and send invites soon. But only after I've successfully launched the wedding web site with all the details and travel information. Guess I know what I'll be doing tonight.

Five on Friday for May 27, 2005

Either/Or

1. Would you rather be alone OR surrounded by enemies for the rest of your life? I would definately rather be alone. It might eventually drive me crazy but it wouldn't destroy me the way enemies would.

2. Are you an early bird OR a night owl? I'm suck a night owl. Maybe I could learn to be an early bird, but my drive tends to get me up at night, not wake me up.

3. When sick, do you prefer to be pampered OR left alone? When I don't feel well all I want is a little concern and a wide berth. Just a "let me know if you need anything" or "there's chicken soup and juice in the kitchen" is sufficient. That said, it was nice to have my mom around when I had my teeth pulled last week. But more because I enjoyed the company than wanting to be waited on.

4. Do you believe in the relative OR the absolute truth? Everything is relative.

5. Which is worse, the Burning Question OR the Painful Truth? The burning question is so much worse. My mind tends to run away with things when there's a burning question in the vicinity.

...Of Steel

I <3 Craft Corner Deathmatch.

In fact, I want to be the Craft Lady of Steel, gluing and stitching competitors into oblivion. I would kick ass and unplug the glue guns later. But seriously. How would one even get into that line of work?

Holding Out

I tried to go without pain killers today. I took a couple low dose ibuprofens before bed and could definately tell the difference when I woke up. The open socket is it's usual pain-in-the-jaw self, all funky and raw, but I noticed that the gums around the extraction sites feel more tender. I made it until noon. Even though I do lots of swishing and cleaning my mouth tends to hurt most after eating. So I think I need at least some drugs in my system for lunch.

Bye Bye Teeth

Within a couple hours my wisdom teeth will be gone. I'll let you know how I'm feeling tomorrow.

UPDATE:They're gone. Took just over an hour and I was awake for the whole thing, albeit sedated. The novocaine is just starting to wear off, so I'm starting to ache. But I've already taken the Vicodin they prescribed for me. I'm hoping that will keep it from being anything more than an ache. The most annoying part is having a numb tongue which makes it hard to swallow my own spit (and the bit of blood that is oozing out of the holes where my teeth used to be). Mom's doing her best to baby me, but it's not needed quite yet. Maybe once there's some swelling...

Dream A Little Dream

1. Describe a dream you have frequently. Honestly? I can't think of any. Except for a couple recurring nightmares when I was a kid, my dreams seem to be one-use-only type things.

2. Describe a nightmare that has haunted you. I've described a couple of them in my journal before, but one of my favorites (now that I'm older) involved my dad doing battle with a fire-breathing dragon at my Grandmother's house in the woods of northern Michigan while I watched from the (very flammable) screen porch.

3. Has a dream ever affected your conscious decisions (ex: caused you to change careers)? I can't remember any specific instances, but I imagine it has happened. Sometimes I wish I took them a little more seriously.

4. Do you dream in color? In sound? Always, unless there's call for a special effect. My dreams are like movies, many without me in them, so sometimes black and white just makes more sense for the genre. They usually have sound as well.

5. Has a dream ever given you insight into your personality or into a particular problem or issue you were dealing with? Yes. The bridge dream has had particular significance for me. Jon finds it especially interesting now that we're getting married in Niagara Falls with my family (including my grandmothers) present. Even more interesting was that the bridge in that dream nearly two years old looked a lot like the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara.

Productivity

Hooray for days off! Not only did I get to sleep away the morning, but I was able to do some things around the apartment and feel productive. I cleaned the bathroom, cleared away some (just some) of my clutter, and took care of a bunch of books. All the read, unwanted books have either been dropped at Goodwill or boxed up and added to my Half.com store. I've already sold a book since I listed them this afternoon, so let me know ASAP if you want any of them. As good as it feels to sell a book, it feels even better to hand it off. Of the books on the list, the most highly recommended would have to be One Hundred Years of Solitude.

As much as I would've enjoyed going to Boston for the alumni event, staying home has a much better outcome. While I may have spent the $18 cover charge on cat food and cleaning products, I was able to read more of The Devil Wears Pinstripes for tomorrow's bookclub meeting, go shopping, and pack up some laundry to take to Jon's tomorrow. And the night isn't over.

Raining Men

OK. That's an exaggeration. It's raining in the men's room down here. William discovered the mini-moat around 4. I called Joan upstairs who called Plant Services who sent Gary over immediately. The HVAC system has sprung a major leak, and only a small part of it was leaking into the men's room. Several pipes in the HVAC room nextdoor burst. With the door open, it sounds quite a bit like the Rainforest Cafe. William was taking photos and plans to upload them to his blog right away. Hopefully we'll have it fixed soon — as in within a week or two. I'm soooo glad that I'm leaving this place for a while...

Vacation Here I Come

It's so nice outside that I wish I had used a vacation day to enjoy it. But my real vacation starts friday, so I can't complain. I'm taking all of next week and Mondays until July. And I still have one extra day to throw around somewhere in there. And it starts all over again with the new fiscal year in July. Hooray for job perks.

Two Things

I forgot to mention a couple things yesterday:

  1. Secret Stuff! I got a package from Knitter's Review last week, courtesy of my Secret Pal. She had them send me a package of beautiful note cards and a handy KR pen. I can only dream of taking fiber/flora photos that beautiful. In fact, it makes me dream of owning a swank digital SLR too...
  2. I <3 Cuban Cuisine. We met up with Jon's parents at The Naked Fish on Sunday for Mother's Day dinner. I knew I was going to be in trouble when I looked at the menu earlier in the week. Mmm, black beans. And rice. And bananas. And sweet potatos. And plantains. And my favorite, mojitos. I think I need a Cuban cookbook.

The Dress

I did it.

I bought the dress. I went to David's Bridal on Saturday and ordered it in ivory. It and the veil should be here in less than six weeks. And did I mention that it was on sale? I tried to pick shoes, but only found relatively flattering sandals. They were pretty comfortable, but don't come in wides, which would be infinitely more comfortable. I picked up these flip-flops as a back up. If you happen find a pair of them at your Target in an 11, I would be forever in your debt.

Mmmm, Meat

I can buy Koegel's online now. And not just Viennas. I can get Braunschweiger and their Coney style chili sauce too. Mmm. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Five on Friday for May 6, 2005

All In a Day's Work

1. Number of jobs you've held.

  1. Cashier - Mrs. Field's Cookies
  2. Assistant - Alpine Typesetting
  3. Computer Monitor/Instructor - SYBerNet Cafe
  4. Sales Associate - Asheley Stewart
  5. Telemarketer - WPI's Alumni Giving
  6. Customer Service Representative - Gander Mountain
  7. Meat Packer - Koegel's Meat Products
  8. Technical Writer/Intern - Compaq/HP
  9. Web Developer - WPI

2. Your biggest raise, by percent. 2.5% — I was supposed to get a 15-20% during my last summer with Compaq, but the merger and the incompetence (resulting in firing) of the HR person kept it from happening.

3. Have you ever quit? That telemarketing job with WPI — only lasted one evening. I wrote the director and said I was never coming back. I suppose I quit my job at HP too. After reporting to 6 different people in 3 months during the merger I decided that the last 2-3 weeks I was scheduled to work just weren't worth it.

4. Have you ever been fired? Thankfully, no.

5. Your worst mistake on the job. Forgetting to change my gloves after scooping up a hotdog off the (sterile) floor. Wouldn't have been so bad if I weren't standing 10 feet from the USDA inspector.

Feel Better Medicine

While I was brushing my teeth this morning and staring absently into my medicine cabinet I noticed that my box of NyQuil Liquicaps has a new slogan. The nighttime sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, sleep better to feel better medicine. Didn't it used to be so you can rest medicine? It doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Not that it really matters much — the stuff will still knock you on your ass.

Contract

This week is all about the wedding. Huge strides have been made in the last few days.

  • I have in my hands a copy of our first attempt at a contract with the Marriott. It's incorrect, but it's a big step. Assuming it only takes a couple days to make corrections, the wedding itself should be official within a week.
  • I picked a dress and just need to order it this weekend. 15 weeks should be enough time to get it ready.
  • We have a location for the Michigan reception/celebration: my dad's house. He seems sure he can pull it off, so I'll let him. Some aspects will probably be stressful, but probably not much more than any other venue we would have found.
  • Despite my attraction to the pink peonies, I have decided to keep the blue hydrangeas. Now I just have to pick a tussy mussy so I can get started arranging.
  • We have a design and paper for the invites. Jon and I just need to finalize the wording and make them. Now that we have more details about the Michigan shindig we can let everyone know about that so they won't worry that they weren't invited to the main event.
  • We're having dinner with Jon's parents this weekend, so we should be able to make some progress on the New England front as well.

Now that I look at the list, it doesn't seem like much, but it makes a huge difference in my perspective on everything.

I keep telling myself that the regular downtime for my site is just a minor annoyance. But now that I have my refund from GoDaddy I think I'll be moving very soon.

Filled

I had my sixth and seventh fillings yesterday. Only one shot this time — and what a shot! The right side of my jaw was numb past my ear. As much as I like my new dentist, I'm glad that I won't have to see her for at least another four months.

Mad Monday

When I cancelled my GoDaddy service just a couple hours after purchasing it Wednesday night the customer service representative said I would likely have all of my money back within 24 hours. When it wasn't there by the closed of business Thursday I figured that it would be there Friday morning. And now that it's Monday and I haven't received a single e-mail from them (including the one they should have sent about my domain transfer which I was still purchasing from them) I'm starting to get mad. They have my $100 and I have no services. So now I'm on hold, waiting to find out exactly what's going on.
