Confessions of a Fugitive Mind

Gym

A few weeks ago I promised Amy that if she signed up for Body Blast (or whatever that sadistic aerobics class is called this term) I would go with her to the gym. And since I no longer had the excuse that I needed to empty out my apartment or drop stuff off at Goodwill I had no choice but to make good.

So I spent about 50 minutes in the fitness center — enough time to warm up, make three circuits of my favorite machines, and do a 10-minute cool-down on the bikes — while she sweated away upstairs with Amy D. I have to admit that it was nice. I usually dread my first workout, but this wasn't bad at all. I had plenty of company, but it was quiet, non-threatening company. And that's always good for getting over the mental hump that accompanies all early trips to the gym. Once you've been going for a while, gaggles of grunting football players don't phase you, but when your resolve is still fragile and weak, they can be enough to make you want to run the other direction.

I think the best part was seeing how much strength I still had. I may have let myself go over the last two years, but I haven't fallen all the way back. At the dawn of the millenium I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without feeling winded and crampy. And when I went to the gym for the first time, I couldn't lift much. Yesterday I was only using a couple fewer plates than I was at my weight-lifting peak, just enough to make me push for the last reps on each set. It felt so good. In fact, I can't wait to go tomorrow.
