Benign
The nodule in my thyroid is benign.
My nurse practitioner called with my results while I was on my way home last night. For a split second I didn't believe her, but there it was. She said benign. Not suspicious, not malignant, but benign.
benign
Then the cords of tension that had been wrapping my chest so tightly for months released. I could breathe in the warm spring air without worrying about surgery or chemotherapy. All the pain and hassle to find out that it was not cancerous? Totally worth it. I still have to go in for quarterly ultrasounds and bloodwork to monitor the growth and function of my thryroid, but that doesn't seem so bad now.

Grandma says her prayers have been granted! : ) Somehow, i felt all along that benign would be the diagnosis, there is such a loooong family history. I will be curious to see how they handle treatment from here on. The endocrinologist i saw told me that i should have been taking thyroid hormones in a dosage that would eliminate the need for my thyroid to produce them....the reason for the enlargement is to produce more hormones for the body's needs. Guess not enough men suffer from thyroid disease to make a thurough study and come to a consistent treatment procedure. (do i hear a soap box rant)
Any way, i'm so happy for you and your relief!
Love you.

Actually, during this whole process we discovered that the nodule is not producing any thyroid hormones. Most nodules are created to help produce more, but in my case it's not doing anything at all. In fact, my bloodwork for the last few years has shown that the rest of my thyroid is actually slightly overactive. I doubt this is the last I'll hear from my thyroid, but for now I can live with the symptoms I have. At least until we convince them to do more research ;)
