Tis the Season

...of gluttony.

  • Saturday: The annual Jay family trip to the Holiday Pops started with snacks at Steve's, egg nog at the Pops, and a decadent dinner at Aujourd'hui. I had a giant bowl of butternut squash and lobster bisque with lobster flan and chive oil before my main course of venison and a squash gratin. I finished it with pear fritters, bittersweet chocolate ice cream and fondue, and a pistachio financier. Heavenly.
  • Sunday: I made a pig of myself on Jami's tasty lasagna at the Big Red House. But it didn't stop there. Jami made a chocolate cake that I had a slice of too.
  • Tuesday: The marketing department luncheon and Vinny Testa's in Lexington. Of course I ordered the penne ala vodka with all the yummy gut busting sausage and creamy vodka sauce. I ate half of it and was still pretty full by the time I finally had some spinach and artichoke dip for dinner.

Almost Perfect - INFP

20% Extraversion, 86% Intuition, 46% Thinking, 6% Judging

So, you want to make the world a better place? Too bad it's never gonna happen.

Of all the types, you have to be one of the hardest to find fault in. You have a selfless and caring nature. You're a good listener and someone who wants to avoid conflict. You genuinely desire to do good.

Of course, these all add up to an incredibly overpowered conscience which makes you feel guilty and responsible when anything goes wrong. Of course, it MUST be your fault EVERYTIME.

Though you're constantly on a mission to find the truth, you have no use for hard facts and logic, which is a source of great confusion for those of us with brains. Despite this, in a losing argument, you're not above spouting off inaccurate fact after fact in an effort to protect your precious values.

You're most probably a perfectionist, which in this case, is a bad thing. Any group work is destined to fail because of your incredibly high standards.

Disregard what I said before. You're just easy to find fault in as everyone else!

Luckily, you're generally very hard on yourself, meaning I don't need to waste my precious time insulting you. Instead, just find all your own faults and insult yourself.

Warning: Sneezing May Be Hazzardous to Your Health

At dinner last night I felt a big sneeze coming on. Rather than try to stare into the lights or take other preventative measures, I turned to the side and let it loose.

Big mistake.

Who knew twisting and sneezing weren't a good combination for core muscles? Well, I found out immediately. It hurt to breathe at first and every little movement made me cringe. The pain is more localized now -- along my lower right ribs near the breastbone -- and being dulled by pain relievers. I'm now acutely aware of the everyday things that require the use of abdominal muscles, like getting into bed, petting the cats, using the toilet, and sneezing.

Night of the Living Dead

Jon is sick. It started with a simple cold early last week and has blossomed into what can best be described as mucus hell.

It wasn't bad until the congestion started keeping him up at night. For four nights in a row. By the weekend he was dehydrated and hadn't gotten more than a few hours sleep. I wasn't surprised when he collapsed in a delerious, clammy heap Sunday morning, although I was a bit terrified. Once I got him comfortable and warm again (his temp dropped to 95.7) we made an appointment with the urgent clinic.

The doctor there was able to convince him he wasn't going to die from a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics to nip it in the bud and prevent it from spreading to his lungs. They broke up the congestion and helped him get some good sleep. He even took a sick day to get more sleep. But last night he couldn't stop coughing (productive, phlegmy coughs, but still coughing fits) and had another fitful night.

He's at home again today, hopefully getting some rest between coughing fits. I just want this thing to run it's course so he can get back to his normal sleep deprivation levels caused by my snoring.

Holiday Spirit

1. Which winter holidays do you celebrate, if any? Why?
While I'm not a Christian, I enjoy plenty of the celebrations for Christmas. I think we've reached a point in our society where a large part of the holiday is secular enough that I feel comfortable participating. You might say I celebrate Winter Solstice, but I haven't really started any traditions for it.
2. How do you like to celebrate those holidays?
I like spending time with my family (which includes the family I married into), eating way too much food, and spoiling people with great presents. I love to decorate with lights and greenery, candles, and shiny glass baubles. Heck, I'll even admit to enjoying the children's pageant on Christmas Eve at Margaret's church. Other than my never-ending search for an appropriate Solstice tree topper (a bright copper sunburst), I haven't gotten very far in celebrating Solstice specifically. It's kind of hard to do when no one else you know "celebrates" it.
3. What is your favorite holiday carol or song?
The Huron Carol! Winter Wonderland is pretty high up there too.
4. Tell us about your favorite holiday tradition.
Just one? Why did I write the question that way? I can't pick one! Today, I think it's baking nutrolls and cookies. Tomorrow it will be something else, like having Christmas breakfast with Dad.
5. If you could change one thing about the holiday season, what would it be?
The space-time continuum? It makes it rather hard to be with all our family at once. Other than that, I would probably request that stores wait until at least December 1 to start shaking us down with holiday shopping displays.

Mr. Beer

Mr. Beer is what got me into homebrewing. In fact, if it wasn't for the horrible swill that comes out of them, I would have never moved on to bigger and better things.

Holiday Spirit

Even my Web site is getting into the holiday spirit this year. I really should come up with a slightly less holiday specific design so I can use it all winter, but that will have to wait until I feel inspired.

Keeping Up With the Joneses

  • Our tree is finally up and decorated. No breakable ornaments because of a certain cat, but that just means I have an excuse to use all of my vintage kitchen themed ornaments. With a few new red lights and garlands it really looks fabulous.
  • About 75% of my holiday shopping is done. I'd like to finish, but I'm waiting for lists from one or two people.
  • I also managed to get tickets for our trip to Michigan before the airfare got ridiculously high. We're flying out early Christmas Eve morning and coming back the following Thursday afternoon. Hopefully the flights won't be overbooked or delayed by bad weather.
  • My turn to host book club on Saturday was a bust. Emily and Alex were the only people able to make the trek to Lowell and none of us had actually finished the book. We had a good visit so I'm glad they made it. We'll have to squeeze In Cold Blood into the next meeting.
  • I love the light sensitive timer we got for the lights on our deck. They're on every night when I come home from work and all evening until we go to bed. And I don't even have to step outside to make it happen.

First Snowfall

1. Do you get snow where you live? How much?
Of course, but only a couple feet a year.
2. When was the last time it snowed in your neck of the woods?
You know, I'm not sure. I think there were some brief flurries back in April, but I haven't seen anything yet this season.
3. Tell us about the worst snowfall/blizzard you've been in.
Probably back in early 2001 when I flew back from Michigan in the middle of a blizzard. There wasn't much snow on the ground when I landed in Providence, but I only made it half-way to Worcester before the plows gave up. I had to hole up in a hotel room for the night. When I got to Worcester the next morning there was nowhere to park because of the two feet of snow on the ground. I had to drive around until the plows came out and cleared the lots.
4. What is your favorite thing about snow?
Everything? I think probably the way it coats everything in a sparkling coat of white. It looks so clean and fresh.
5. Imagine two ideal homes, all things being the same except climate. Do you choose to live the rest of your life somewhere that never sees a snowflake or somewhere that sees a plethora of them every winter? Why?
I'll take the plethora of snow. While driving in it isn't always fun, I don't think I could be happy for very long without it.
